A broken panel in a sunroom, solarium, conservatory, or skylight changes quickly from a glass problem into a weather and safety problem. An emergency broken glass board up limits access to the damaged opening, keeps rain and wind out, and gives the property owner time to arrange the correct permanent repair. It is a protective measure, not the repair itself.

For homes across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and the surrounding area, the right response depends on where the glass failed, how the structure is built, and whether the opening is exposed to weather. A ground-level patio door panel requires a different approach than an angled conservatory roof panel or a high skylight. Treating them the same can create further damage.

Make the Area Safe Before Covering It

Broken glazing can leave sharp fragments in the frame, on furniture, and several feet beyond the visible opening. Keep children, pets, and anyone without protective footwear away from the area. If the damage is overhead, do not stand directly below it or move furniture beneath it until loose pieces have been assessed.

Avoid pressing tape onto cracked tempered glass to “hold it together.” Tempered glass can break suddenly into small pieces, especially after a panel has been struck or its edge has been damaged. Laminated glass may remain in place after breaking, but its interlayer can still be compromised and the panel may no longer keep water out.

If it is safe to do so, photograph the damaged panel, the frame, and any nearby signs of water entry. Photos can help document the condition for insurance purposes and help a glazing contractor identify whether the issue is likely limited to the glass or involves seals, frames, flashing, or structural movement.

When an Emergency Broken Glass Board Up Is Needed

Boarding up is appropriate when an opening cannot be safely reglazed immediately and the home needs short-term protection. Storm damage, impact damage, vandalism, a failed roof panel, or a shattered insulated glass unit can all leave a structure exposed.

The urgency is higher when the opening is in a roof, a sloped solarium system, or a wall facing prevailing wind and rain. In these cases, water can enter concealed frame channels, wall connections, insulation, and wood supports. What appears to be one broken panel can lead to staining, rot, corrosion, or mold conditions if moisture is allowed to travel.

A board-up is also useful when replacement glass must be custom fabricated. Many sunrooms and conservatories use non-standard sizes, specialty tints, curved panels, older aluminum systems, or insulated units that cannot be replaced from standard stock. The temporary enclosure should protect the opening while measurements, glass specifications, and installation details are confirmed.

Why Plywood Is Not Always the Right Material

Plywood is commonly associated with emergency protection, but it is not automatically suitable for every glass structure. On a conventional vertical opening, properly supported exterior-grade plywood can provide a practical temporary barrier. On a skylight, glass roof, or delicate aluminum-framed solarium, attaching wood in the wrong place can bend frame members, pierce drainage channels, damage gaskets, or create new leaks.

A temporary cover may instead involve a rigid polycarbonate sheet, weather-resistant paneling, reinforced protective film, or a carefully secured tarp system. The right material depends on the opening, exposure, structural support, and how long the temporary protection will remain in place.

The trade-off is straightforward: a heavier, more rigid cover generally offers better impact resistance, but it needs secure anchoring and should not overload an aging frame. A lighter cover may be easier to install around an irregular opening, yet it may not withstand sustained wind. The goal is not to force a standard board-up method onto every situation. It is to protect the home without damaging the system that will later need to be repaired.

Do Not Block Drainage Paths

Sunroom and solarium frames are designed with drainage channels that direct incidental water outward. During a rushed board-up, it is easy to seal across weep holes or cover frame drainage paths with tape, caulking, or sheeting. That can trap water inside the frame and send it into the home.

Temporary protection should shed water away from the opening while preserving the system’s intended drainage route. If water is already entering around multiple panels or joints, the failure may involve deteriorated silicone, worn gaskets, damaged flashing, or blocked drainage rather than the broken glass alone.

The Permanent Repair Starts With Diagnosis

Once the property is secure, the next step is determining why the glass failed and what adjacent components may have been affected. A branch impact is obvious. Other failures are less clear. A cracked panel can result from frame movement, a corroded aluminum pressure cap, thermal stress, inadequate edge clearance, a failed setting block, or long-term water intrusion around the glazing system.

Replacing only the pane may be enough when the frame is sound and the break was caused by a single impact. It is not enough when seals have deteriorated, the frame is loose, the roof is leaking, or the structure shows corrosion or rot. In those cases, a new panel installed into a failing opening may only postpone the next repair.

A qualified assessment should review the glass type, panel thickness, insulated glass unit construction, frame condition, gaskets, silicone joints, drainage, flashing, and the attachment between the glass structure and the house. This is particularly important for older or discontinued solarium systems, where original parts may no longer be available and custom fabrication may be required.

Special Considerations for Skylights and Glass Roofs

A broken skylight or overhead conservatory panel deserves more caution than a broken wall panel. The replacement must be designed for its location and loading requirements. Roof glazing may need safety-rated laminated glass, tempered glass, insulated glass, or a specific combination of these materials depending on the system and application.

Do not walk on a glass roof, lean a ladder against a damaged panel, or assume a temporary cover can support weight. Even glass that looks intact may have hidden edge damage after an impact. A leaking skylight can also be a flashing problem rather than a glazing problem, so replacing glass without inspecting the surrounding roof connection can leave the source of the leak unresolved.

What to Tell Your Glazing Contractor

Clear information helps move an urgent repair forward. Explain whether the panel is vertical, sloped, or overhead; whether the break is complete or only cracked; and whether rain is entering the home. Mention any existing fog between panes, drafts, recurring leaks, corrosion, or visible rot around the opening.

If possible, provide approximate panel dimensions and photos from inside and outside. Do not remove glazing beads, pressure caps, or remaining glass simply to obtain a measurement. A specialist can determine the required size and glass build-up while keeping the opening stable and safe.
